Mission: The mission of 412 Food Rescue is to prevent perfectly good food from entering the waste stream and redirecting it to people in need.

Results: 412 Food Rescue is one of the fastest-growing food recovery organizations in the U. S. Since launching in 2015,412 Food Rescue has recovered over 14 million pounds of food, redirecting it from landfills to people experiencing food insecurity. Much of this has been accomplished through the development, launch and utilization of an innovative technology platform – the Food Rescue Hero mobile app which is now being used in cities across the country by food rescue organizations.

Target demographics: People experiencing food insecurity and everyone who is concerned with the intertwined and important issues of food waste, hunger and climate change.

Direct beneficiaries per year: We provide food to over 600 nonprofits in the Southwestern PA area that make it available to over 100,000 people annually.

Geographic areas served: the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities.

Programs: Our Food Rescue Hero technology, an app that connects food donor organizations such as restaurants, grocery stores and catering companies to nonprofit partners such as pantries, shelters and the Housing Authority which provide meals to people experiencing food insecurity. Volunteer drivers claim food rescue opportunities and transport the food.
