Causes: Counseling, Mental Health

Mission: A Mother's Rest is a 501c3 health initiative which coordinates affordable, frequent, nationwide mental health respite retreats exclusively for parents & caregivers of disabled children and adults. We also host spouses of wounded veterans, special educators, adoptive families, military families, and those caring for their own elderly parents at home. With the help of bed and breakfast inn partners, we provide opportunities for recuperative rest and therapeutic fellowship for caregivers who desperately need a few days away from their caregiving environment. In Fall 2018, we purchased the nation's first respite inn in New Market, MD (The Terrace Guest House & Respite Inn). That is open year-round, every weekend, exclusively for parents & caregivers for only a small donation. In Jan 2020, we purchased a 2nd signature respite inn in Mt. Airy, GA to support our Southeast Region families. Longer term goals include owning more flagship respite inns in multiple regions. In Virginia, we are planning a respite CAMPUS that will include an inn, a coffee shop, wine tasting spot, therapeutic rescue animal farm, garden market, thrift shop, and other valuable community resources.

Results: As of September 2022, (584) respite retreats have been completed, with (132) more already scheduled. Our Signature Inns in New Market, MD and Mt. Airy, GA are completely dependent on financial support from guests, individual philanthropic giving, local churches, civic groups, and community foundations. For FY 2024, we are actively seeking to purchase a 3rd respite inn located in Eastern NC, so we can better serve our coastal families and veterans/military caregivers.

Target demographics: parents & caregivers of children, adults, and spouses with extra needs, wives of Wounded Warriors, special educators, all adoptive & foster parents, and those caring for their own infirm parents at home.

Direct beneficiaries per year: More than 1000 weary parents & caregivers

Geographic areas served: Nationwide

Programs: Parent & caregiver mental health respite retreats. Future: summer camp grants, child care funding, inclusive residential community.
