If you love the Adirondacks and want a deeper understanding off its history and culture, this book is a must have. The format is a bunch of short stories written by various authors that range from interesting to fascinating! I got my copy as a gift and have since bought 3 copies to give to family members and friends.

This 3rd edition of The Adirondack Reader offers a detailed picture of the natural and cultural history of the Adirondacks. The book is divided into ten sections, each with an assortment of selections that deal with the early and present-day history and impact of people in the Park; stories of discovery and disaster; the perspectives of seasonal visitors and full-time residents; observations on the water, woods, and mountains. One learns about guides and guideboats, meeting John Brown, snowmobiles, Camps, and paddling the Hudson. This is a rather lengthy book to be savored slowly; each selection is relatively short, but there are many. The editors have included 32 pages of paintings and photographs, and brief biographies of the authors and artists. After reading this volume I was left with a much deeper appreciation of the Park, even up to 34;the rubbery belching...of the frogs.34;
