Mission: The Allegany County Animal Shelter serves as a “Shelter of Hope” for the lost, abandoned, and homeless animals of Allegany County. We strive to expand and strengthen our leadership in animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs and to find common-sense solutions for animal-related problems in our community.

Results: This year our community and our Shelter team placed 1,400 animals in adopted homes, fosters and rescues or were returned to owners saving the lives of well over 95% of the animals that came into our care. It’s a huge undertaking but one that our community has come to value. Allegany County has the first, and only one of two, municipal no-kill shelters in the Maryland. That’s something to celebrate.

We strive to expand and strengthen our leadership in animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs and to find common-sense solutions for animal-related problems in our community. Statistics for 2014 are as follows: - saved over 94% of the animals in our care for the 3rd straight year - gained increasing national and regional recognition as maryland's only municipal shelter of hope - reached the "lucky 33" in time to save more than 3 dozen dogs and their expectant puppies from abandonment and neglect - improved animal control telephone support and procedures - energized and proactive new appointments to the animal control board
