However, we were determined not to give up on the betterment of all animals on the island, and continued to fight for their safety and welfare. These are our biggest achievements of the year 2017:* 140 pets rescued, sterilized and vaccinated and either adopted or transported to no-kill sister shelters in the U. S. * Two major freedom flights. In June, 22 dogs were transported to Animal Rescue Fund of The Hamptons. And immediately following Hurricane Maria, in early October, we received generous donations and were able to fund a private flight to get 63 of our animals transported to shelters in the United States that were accepting rescues from Puerto Rico. We thank you!* A FREE sterilization clinic during the month of December with Dr. Jose Cruz and his mobile sterilization unit, and sterilized and vaccinated 25 low-income community pets. We hope to do another in 2018!* ADLA participated in the annual “Clear the Shelters” or Desocupar los Albergues organized by Telemundo. The Municipality of Loiza and its Mayor Julia M. Nazario assisted by hosting ADLA’s adoptable rescues in the Plaza of Loiza, where low-cost vaccinations were also performed. Mayor Nazario herself adopted little Timón!* We held two Pups for Pubs events at the Boardriders Surf Bar and Grill hosted activity Playa Arte in La Pared, Luquillo, where we sold doggy art and shared our mission with the surfside community. * Students from the Club de Amigos de los Animales and Photonews Club from the la Escuela Carmen Feliciano Carrera came twice to volunteer and practice their photography skills on our dogs! * ADLA and our Shelter Director Adri were featured in the Comedy Central show “The Opposition” in the episode: “Puerto Rico’s Hurricane Recovery: A 10 out of 10.The host of the show Jordan Klepper adopted one of our dogs: now named Izzy.
