Should you hit something, the bushing acts as a \"breakaway, \" allowing the prop to spin and safeguarding drive train components such as gears. There is usually enough friction left to operate at low RPMs - sort of like a \"go home\" mode. With high RPM, a spinning hub seems like a power loss. At high RPM, the prop will almost certainly slip. It also absorbs power from the engine to the boat\'s propeller. It accomplishes this by transferring spinning power from the front to the back. Torque will transfer from the transmission to the boat\'s differential, which then sends torque to the propeller, allowing the vehicle to move. You can\'t drive without torque transfer between the various components. The shock of shifting is absorbed by a 1 3/4" to 1 3/8" NYLON (NB12) bushing inside an outboard propeller hub.. Should you hit something, the bushing acts as a "breakaway, " allowing the prop to spin and safeguarding drive train components such as gears. There is usually enough friction left to operate at low RPMs - sort of like a "go home" mode. With high RPM, a spinning hub seems like a power loss. At high RPM, the prop will almost certainly slip. It also absorbs power from the engine to the boat's propeller. It accomplishes this by transferring spinning power from the front to the back. Torque will transfer from the transmission to the boat's differential, which then sends torque to the propeller, allowing the vehicle to move.
