Target demographics: Homeless pets and those pets in need of low-cost wellness services

Direct beneficiaries per year: 3,519 homeless pets find homes; fostered 1,928 pets prior to adoption; reunited 133 lost pets with their families; provided 3,878 wellness visits to pets in need.

Geographic areas served: St. Louis, Missouri and surrounding communities

Programs: Adoption: We find and match pets with safe and loving homes. Adoption is at the heart of what we do at the APA. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020 we matched 3,519 pets with wonderful new families. For animals that are too sick, pregnant or need medical attention, our temporary foster homes offer a safe and healthy environment to grow and recuperate. In 2020,1,928 pets were fostered before adoption -- a record for the APA!

Wellness: We keep pets healthy so they can stay in their homes. Wellness services are an important component of our work to help people maintain a healthy pet. In addition to low-cost wellness services, which reach thousands of companion animals each year, the APA also understands that spaying and neutering are critical to the health (and population management) of animals throughout the community. In 2020, the APA provided 2,794 spay and neuter surgeries.

Education: We cultivate hope and a more kind and compassionate world. The APA has a 30+ year history of developing and implementing innovative educational programming. Taking a lifespan approach to both people and pets, we offer a variety of programming to people age 2 to 102.This includes animal-focused literacy programs for toddlers and preschoolers, school-based animal safety programs and programs geared toward our most mature citizens, including Pet Reach and Senior Saviors.

We remain on the leading edge of change. The APA has developed a reputation for being an innovator in our region. We are just the right size to be nimble and responsive, but big enough to affect lasting change. This can be seen in our recent successes, like the launch of Pet Partners, which serves animals in low-income communities, or our No More Bullying program, that involves school partnerships where we deliver a unique, anti-bullying curriculum. You can see it in our commitment to providing the best care to animals in need, minimizing their fear and addressing emotional and social needs through enrichment. In our move to be the first shelter in the state to remove breed labels. In our award-winning "Grown-Ass Adult" senior pet adoption PR campaign, which went viral and reduced the average length of stay for senior pets by 3 days. Or in our commitment to the professional development and care of our staff.
