Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Our goal is to promote Trap-Neuter-Return programs and education so that people can conduct projects before the outdoor cat population in their area (home, neighborhood or city) becomes unmanageable. We often receive calls when a person realizes that they or a family member can no longer feed and care for the outdoor cats because the cats were not sterilized when the numbers were few. By controlling the outdoor cat population, we hope to reduce the number of cats that need to be adopted out. Because there always will be some cats (and dogs) that need new families, we want to be able to continue a successful adoption program where the focus is on finding the right match for the cat or dog, not just boosting adoption numbers. Finally, we would like to be able to provide a caring environment for long-term foster animals that are not adoptable due to medical, socialization or other issues. We currently are limited in the number of long-term fosters that we can help because of the need to house and care for these animals in individual foster homes. We want to be able to establish a sanctuary to care for these animals in a safe, caring environment.

Results: Our organization's Trap-Neuter-Return programs have been helping to reduce the number of cats being born in the wild in the Bulverde/Spring Branch area. We continue to offer TNR education and in 2014 began reaching out to the communities in the New Braunfels area to help them institute TNR programs. In 2016, we have had only one litter of cats born at all the feral/community cat colonies that we manage. This litter was quickly identified, and the kittens and mama cat have been sterilized and are available for adoption. We continue to receive many calls for assistance in conducting TNR projects, and in 2016 we were able to partner on TNR with a local business that previously had been resistant to such programs. Our directors also advocate, through the public and to public officials, creation of TNR programs, gaining support for TNR in additional communities in the area. In 2016 our efforts received a big boost as local city officials announced increased support for TNR programs, including the consideration of funding programs in the city. We also have successful Barn/Working Cat and Adoption programs, both of which help educate the public about cats and provide good, safe homes for otherwise homeless animals.
