There may be no reason to not just use a spacer, but these just seem more safe and secure. I used them to extend outlets on a tile backsplash and am very happy with the look and feel in the installation.

Great for our old mobile home remodel! Installed 3/4 tongue and groove wood on the walls and needed to extend the old boxes. The local home improvement store only had extenders for new style boxes which were too big. These fit well. Can also be trimmed for odd instances.
