Mission: Austin Pets Alive! fills critical gaps in shelter animal live-outcome rates by identifying the key groups of animals that are typically euthanized in shelters and maintaining comprehensive, innovative programs to address the problems these key groups face. APA! pioneered programs to care specifically for these groups, thereby reducing their staggering over-representation on euthanasia lists and directly increasing shelter save rates. With a safety net for homeless pets established and sustainable in Austin, Austin Pets Alive! is now scaling its impact by helping other communities replicate its successes through mentorship and education. This takes place chiefly through APA!'s national outreach and education division, American Pets Alive (AmPA). In 2020, AmPA began leading the national Human Animal Support Services collaborative, which seeks to refocus the services of shelters on preserving human-animal bonds, thereby reducing shelter intake and consequent needless euthanasia. (Less)
