Causes: Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Children & Youth

Mission: Big Brothers Big Sisters empowers kids to stay on track to graduate with a plan for their future and the impact of a mentor for their lifetime. Our Mission is to “Create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. ”

Results: Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nationally recognized mentoring program with 118 years of experience and success. Our Service Delivery Model is comprised of evidence-based, best practices to guide program delivery to drive positive outcomes and relationship safety. As new and emerging best practices in mentoring evolve, BBBS alongside mentoring and youth development experts, examine our standards and service delivery model ensuring child safety and quality mentoring experiences. Locally the agency is celebrating 35 years of pairing kids to mentors (Little & Big matches). Due to our success in digital mentoring, our agency contributed to Johns Hopkins University's research to set best practices in digital mentoring. In 2020, during a pandemic, 579 kids were matched to a caring mentor and achieved positive results:
•93% were more confident at school.
•90% got along better with their peers and families.
•100% had no Juvenile justice involvement.
•92% of youth took action steps to set goals for their future. Mentoring youth is considered a first-line defense tactic to support at-risk kids. When youth gain a caring role model, they learn to trust and confide in someone outside of their family, develop a different perspective on life, make less risky choices than their non-mentored peers, and achieve more, academically and socially.
