I made a black velvet version of black forest cake with cherries for a Halloween party, and it turned out beautifully! Gorgeous black cake that was very tasty and not overly sweet (because the velvet cakes are great for that!). The frosting was dark grey, but it looked great with some black dusting sugar and some cherries on top, so I didn't mind. Last time I made a black cake, I had to hunt down food coloring and use so much that it didn't taste as nice. I'm glad to not have to do that now, unless I want to darken up that frosting a little bit.
