Mission: Blood:Water is an equipping agency that partners with African grassroots organizations to address the water and HIV/AIDS crises by identifying Africa’s hidden heroes and coming alongside their vision for change. Blood:Water provides technical, financial, and organizational support so that African civil society organizations have expanded reach and effectiveness in the communities they serve.

Results: Since 2004, Blood:Water has been partnering with grassroots organizations in sub-Saharan Africa, joining them to serve the communities where they live and work. Through outreach and intimate knowledge of these areas, their partners identify and empower local heroes to champion the issues affecting the health and well-being of their families and neighbors. Partners form water committees, train community health promoters, and implement support groups to combat stigma, resulting in community transformation.

Target demographics: Communities in sub-Saharan Africa affected by the HIV/AIDS and water crises

Direct beneficiaries per year: 81,855 people were provided with HIV prevention services; 65,651 were trained in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); 12,755 individuals gained access to clean water

Geographic areas served: Africa

Programs: Blood:Water strives to end the water and HIV/AIDS crises in sub-Saharan Africa through multi-year granting partnerships with African organizations, strategically leveraging funding alongside organizational strengthening initiatives. Grants focus on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and three overlapping elements of HIV/AIDS: community care support, combination prevention, and health system strengthening. . . . Our funding of partners with WASH Projects includes: creating safe water access through wells, filtration systems, rain tanks, protected springs, and other creative solutions based on local conditions and expertise; providing sanitation and hygiene training alongside water solutions to ensure maximum health benefits, especially for those living with compromised immune systems; training local leaders to champion healthy behaviors through the formation of water committees during the implementation of water points. . . . Our funding of partners with HIV/AIDS-focused projects includes: improving community care and support services for individuals and families living with HIV; offering HIV testing and counseling to allow people to begin treatment and take steps to live positively; allowing future generations to be born free of HIV through programs that prevent the spread of the virus from mothers to their unborn babies. . . . Our funding of organizational strengthening (capacity building) includes: facilitating transparent, partner-driven assessments of critical areas of operation, and supporting the development and implementation of improvement plans; providing technical assistance to create the greatest impact of water and HIV projects for generations to come; hosting summits where our partners can learn from each other and build relationships
