Mission: Our mission, at Brookwood Christian School, is to encourage exceptional students enrolled in first through twelfth grades to work to their very best abilities to achieve their full potential in a low stress Christian environment. We nurture individual learning styles while remediating specific deficits and gaps in previous instruction.  We strive to improve our students’ quality of life through academics, physical, emotional, cultural, social, and spiritual growth.

Results: In 2018-2019, the average gain in reading scores was 1.3 years. 90% of students gained greater than 1 year in at least one of the subtests. The subtest with the greatest gain was "passage comprehension", 60% saw at least a year gain and 22% of students had a gain greater than 3 years. Because of COVID there was not a 2020 testing administration. Our 2021 scores showed better than expected gains and we should be able to do a better year to year comparison without the gap year. Many BCS students have been diagnosed with a language based learning disability such as dyslexia, or have some other type of language processing disorder.  We currently use two programs to address their reading needs, Wilson Reading System® and FastForWord®. Class sizes are small, ideally five or less, so students get the individual attention and instruction they need. Sixty-five percent of our students go to college or technical school, some even joint enroll while in high school.

Target demographics: students struggling with reading and/or processing disorders

Programs: Brookwood Christian School is a private, non-profit, non-denominational Christian school that serves students who have not been successful in public or private schools due to their unique learning needs. Students typically have an IQ ranging from low average to gifted accompanied with various individual or multiple learning disorders such autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, neurological disorder, and other specific learning disabilities. The school’s specialized and tailored curriculum is designed to compensate for or overcome dyslexia and the other learning disorders. Because of our students’ inability to function in a normal school setting, we offer specialized methods and materials recommended by doctors, occupational therapists, and speech language pathologists. Personal daily attention is given to each student to improve the student’s low attention span and to provide an environment in which our students can adjust to a normal competitive classroom situation and to help them qualify for future post secondary education and independent living.
