I don't teach history, but I enjoy including history into my reading and writing lessons. I often bring in aspects of the constitution when we talk about argument. I also have a strong desire to make sure that our students know what their rights are and what they are not. We've done a lot of discussion about the limitations of the rights that students don't completely understand. With this as background knowledge, then we can discuss current events with a better understanding. Because of this, I like to have this as a reference book. I have not used any of the quizzes, and don't plan to. There is a lot of memorization if you use it as an actual learning unit. It's much better to just do as a reading reference.

Great book for teaching the US Constitution--easy to understand and to teach in chunks. A homeschooler tool, indeed. It states grade 5 but I'll be using it for younger students who are at the same reading level and moving fast through their studies. I'm enjoying reading through the pages!

This workbook has some great exercises in US government facts. It is absolutely perfect for a child who needs a little help at home in learning these facts or for the child who is home schooled. The workbook features an article to be read and then follow up questions to help with comprehension. This is a great workbook that all kids should work on.

this an a concise look at the US Constitution. It is well organized though essentially a bare bones presentation. that being said what is presented is presented accurately. The richness of the document and its history is lost by virtue of the format but it is enough to convey the primary principles and is more than enough to past most tests. A good supplement or study aid.

I have to confess that I didn't choose this book to use for homeschooling. I don't homeschool anyone. I chose it because it's been a while since I studied the Constitution in high school and again in college, and I felt that I had forgotten quite a bit of what is actually in the Constitution. In today's world, there is a lot of arguing about the subject and I felt that I needed a refresher course. I am very pleased with this book. It's well laid out, easy to understand, yet thorough, and it has a little test after the different sessions so that you can be sure you will really remember it. It also has the full Constitution written out. I think it would be a good resource (IMHO) for a homeschool class on the subject. I think it would probably be good for ages 13 and up, and perhaps a bit younger, if the student reads and understands well and the teacher goes over the subject thoroughly.

I don't understand how a book like this can be said to cover grades 5-12 -- the age range is much too wide. Earlier editions were for grades 5-8. That's more understandable, but still a stretch. The approach of this book is rote memorization of facts. It covers the material in a straightforward way, but it's dry as dust. I've been researching the Nineteenth Amendment (women's suffrage), and it's such a dramatic story! To see it reduced to a single, emotionless paragraph is disheartening. This is not a book meant to engender conversation, just fact memorization. Each unit ends with fact-based questions. Once or twice, the questions are open-ended (34;Do you think it's okay to scream 'Fire!' in a crowded theater?34;), but it's not enough to make this book come to life. I pity the poor students who have this book in their history class.

When I ordered this, it came across as a reference book for the US Constitution. But it turns out to be more of a workbook for your 5-8th grader. That is great and neat and useful, but it just seems like it was a little misrepresented.

This book requires too much memorization! Why on earth students want to memorize the order of amendments? Because this book is for young kids, it should be designed story-like. But this book is full of terminologies and even legal terms in Latin. I will not let my children study from this book. It is better for them to study math and science. One thing I like is plain English and easy to understand.
