Not quite what I was expecting. I guess I was confusing Spelling and Reading. It is very slow moving. We are using it for homeschooling. The left page has a few cartoon frames and a sentence of an on-going story to go with each. The right page has some letter/sound/comprehension exercises. The cartoon story is picked up again on the next left page. There are a total of 4 or 5 34;stories34; in the book. My complaint about the right hand pages is that the pictures are often hard to guess (what letter does this word start with? Well, would a kid call that a hat or a cap? See what I mean?) We will use it, but I don't think it is teaching him much. I like the DK Workbooks: Spelling much better.

I bought this to help my daughter get up to level with her class and maybe ahead. We do one page (back and front) every day. I'm not sure if the school she attends is advanced or if the first part of this book is meant to be review, but she is finding it to be extremely easy. Too easy, even.

I have used spectrum math 1 and phonic 1, and gave 5 start review. My son is slow in reading. Phonic 1 has been working great to teach him how to read words. This reading1 is not much helpful. It has some stories to read, think and answer, some worksheets to practice words/phonics and some complicated stories to read/think/answer. Stories are ok. Worksheets are useless. Pictures in the worksheets are not clear what they are asking. I just skip the worksheets and make my son read stories and talk about them. Basically, 30 of the book is waste.

This workbook does a great job in helping a young reader to understand the context of the story. We started with the phonics and this was the right choice in moving forward

My daughter has been fighting reading, but I found her working in this workbook of her own choosing. She loves the duck story on every other page and it keeps her going. I really like this workbook.

My kid has been using these books for a year and we live it as a supplement to his regular school work. At some point he even wanted to do this first thing since he came home from school
