Causes: Human Services

Mission: The center for independence is a 501(c)3 organization serving as a resource for individuals with disabilities to fully access and participate in the community through outreach, advocacy, and independent living skills development. We serve people with disablilities in pierce, thurston and souuth king counties.

Programs: Advocacy & il skills training. Staff works one on one with people with significant disabilities to reach goals necessary to live independently. Provide in depth evaluation of a person's abilities and create a written report detailing where this person needs support to live independently.

youth transition program. Served young people with significant disabilities to coach them one on one to achieve goals towards living independently in the community, furthering education, obtaining services, finding jobs, and improving access to the community.

deinstitutionalization. Teaming with nursing homes and dshs to move people with significant disabilities out of nursing homes into the community.

support group (out & about). Provides peer support and peer mentoring for over 100 adults with significant disabilities to encourage independence, community access, and connections with each other. Improved social skills, increased health awareness, education on advocacy and civil rights, and a sense of community are all results for those in program. System advocacy. Working with local, state, and national government to educate them on how their decisions impact the population we serve. Social security work incentive planning.
