We’re a tax accounting firm that prepares and assembles a lot of tax returns throughout the year, ranging in sizes up to about 200 pages thick. Additionally, we bind each tax return with 80-pound cover stock on both the front and back sides of the return to “finish” the tax return for client delivery. The Charles Leonard Extra Heavy-Duty Stapler is a very heavy-duty stapler that has handled this task extremely well. As one reviewer stated, “it can staple a book”. This stapler does not require any special brand of staple, other than a “heavy-duty” staple, so we use assorted sizes of Swingline Heavy-Duty Staples. The manufacturer’s product information states that this stapler uses heavy-duty staples ranging from 3/8” up to 15/16”; however, we’ve also used 1/434; heavy-duty staples with this stapler, and it has worked without any problems. The manufacturer did state that it would work when we contacted them prior to purchase, as we also need to use 1/434; staples for assembling smaller tax returns. Using heavy-duty staples from 1/434; up to 3/434;, so far we’ve stapled tax returns ranging from about 15 pages thick up to about 150 pages thick, along with the additional 80-pound cover stock on the front and back of the tax return. This stapler has gone through everything effortlessly, and much more easily than our heavy-duty Swingline staplers that we’ve been using for many years. The stapling process with this stapler is so effortless, even with very thick tax returns, you almost think it hasn’t stapled the tax return package at all but it has. Also, the Charles Leonard Extra Heavy-Duty Stapler has the capacity of stapling up to 230 pages, but we haven’t yet gone to that extreme. Using the larger staple sizes (3/4” and up, for stapling 150 pages and up) does require that you adjust the anvil position (from position “A” to position “B”) for proper stapling, which does make a difference; however, this adjustment literally takes a second to do. This stapler also has a locking adjustable throat guide (with a depth of up to 234;), which is nice as well because it’s secure and won’t slip when stapling. The push-button front loading of the staples is also extremely easy when changing from one staple size to another. This stapler hasn’t yet jammed, so I can’t attest that it “clears jams easily”, but according to the instructions for clearing jams, it would appear as though clearing jams is also simple. The Charles Leonard Extra Heavy-Duty Stapler is an excellent well-made heavy-duty stapler that so far has significantly outperformed our existing heavy-duty Swingline staplers. For anyone seeking an extra heavy-duty stapler, I would highly recommend this one.

After going through several staplers that failed when things got thick we bought this workhorse. It can go through 3/434; of paper. Our tax firm often come across returns that are very large and now we can staple everything in one booklet.

It seemed as though this could have been a good stapler but the thing jammed straight out of the box! We tried three different sizes of staples to see if we could fix the problem. Sadly, it had to go back. It had a nice weight and appearance otherwise...
