Mission: To be there for every foster child in Silicon Valley who has experienced abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

Results: In FY 2020, Child Advocates supported 650 CASA volunteers to work one-on-one with 940 children in the Santa Clara County Dependency Court System (commonly referred to as foster care). Over the past 34 years, the agency has served more than 16,000 children in the foster care system with a CASA. Child Advocates’ goal to provide all of the county’s foster children with a CASA is based on the fact that foster children with CASAs achieve greater outcomes than those without. In FY 20,95% of Child Advocates’ youth completed their high school requirements, compared to fewer than 50% of foster children nationwide; and, 80% of Child Advocates’ children ages 3 to 5 were enrolled in preschool, compared to just 23% of all 3 to 5 year old Santa Clara County foster children.

Target demographics: We serve children aged birth to 21 years old, who have been placed in the Santa Clara County Dependency Court System for having experienced abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 940 children in the foster care system by supporting 650CASA volunteers.

Geographic areas served: Santa Clara County

Programs: The goal of our Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Program is to ensure every child in the Santa Clara County Dependency Court System (foster care) has a caring, stable adult in their life to mitigate the effects of having experienced abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment. As an affiliate of the National Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Association, we are responsible for adhering to the national guidelines when training, recruiting and supporting CASA Volunteers in Santa Clara County. All CASA Volunteers are trained community members who are appointed with a court order by a judge to advocate for the best interests of a child in foster care. They stay with each case for up to a year or until the case is closed and the child is in a safe, permanent home. CASA Volunteers work with legal and child welfare professionals, educators, service providers and family members to ensure the child’s voice is heard. Their advocacy enables judges to make the most well-informed decision for each child.
