Causes: Cancer, Emergency Assistance, Health, Human Services, Pediatrics

Mission: Circle of Care provides practical, emotional and financial assistance to Connecticut families, through programs and services that meet the unique and challenging needs of pediatric cancer treatment. Until no family has to hear the words, "your child has cancer, " we will be here.

Results: Established in 2003 by families whose children battled cancer, we have grown from being a local organization helping limited numbers of families to one that now operates state-wide. We have reached over 2,800 families, delivering Bags of Love to every child in Connecticut on the day of diagnosis, transforming over 140 rooms through our DreamRoom makeover program, and providing over $2 million in direct emergency financial support to families struggling to make ends meet while caring for their sick child.

Target demographics: All children, adolescents and young adults being treated for cancer in CT and their families, and CT childrend being treated elsewhere.

Direct beneficiaries per year: In 2020, we helped 120 families through our Lifeline Emergency Fund, giving over $300,000 in assistance; delivered 85 Bags of Love; estimated 1,560 in volunteer hours; completed 5 Art from the Heart rooms; and sent 55 siblings to camp.

Geographic areas served: Connecticut

Programs: Bags of Love: Delivered at the hospital on the day of diagnosis, these bags provide meal and parking vouchers and everyday essentials like toiletries, along with our resource directory, The Purple Pages.

Lifeline Support Network: connects families who are in treatment with those who have been through it, offering a valuable connection during a time of crisis.

Lifeline Emergency Fund: A financial assistance program aimed at alleviating the financial difficulties many families experience when their children are undergoing treatment for cancer. We provide up to $2,000 per family per year based on need. With 70% of families experiencing a financial crisis during treatment, we ensure that no parent has to choose between caring for a child and providing for their family.

Circle of Care Hospital Volunteers: are active at Yale New Haven’s Smilow Cancer Center and their outpatient clinic in Trumbull, providing welcome diversions to children during the long hours of treatment.

Art from the Heart: Through this program, we transform a cancer patient’s room at home into a personal wonderland.
