There is no single detergent that is the best for every single situation, but Country Save is the closest I've found. Hard water, soft water, super dirty to delicate ... It just works. And keep in mind if things seem "worse" the first time you try it, that might be because of your old detergent, not this one. That big national brand is notorious for "sealing problems in" by coating the fabric more than cleaning it, sealing problems in (which is exacerbated by fabric softener). I first heard of this from cloth diapering people and rolled my eyes a lot because OF COURSE people who get fanatic about something suggest some niche, hard-to-source brand. Then I moved and couldn't get my usual cloth diaper detergent, and found this at the local store. Not only did the cloth diapers come out literally squeaky clean (the wet fabric "squeaked" against my fingers), the heavily muddy Carhart jeans came clean in just one wash without an extra soak. I have used this in a part of the country that has extreme hard water issues, as well as a region that has the softest water in the US (so soft it's nearly distilled). It worked equally well in both, though I had to adjust the dosing a little. I did find that fabrics come out "stiff" if I use too much detergent. Reducing how much I used and using a vinegar rinse helped with that. Like I said no single detergent is perfect for everything: The one downside is that I found colors fade a little more quickly with this detergent. I like to wash dark and bright knits (and "nice" jeans) on cold, then hang to dry, to preserve their color and stretch for a long time (like 5-10 years). Bright cottons do fade more quickly with this detergent so I keep a gentler detergent around for "delicates". The problem with "delicates" detergents is that they don't get things as clean, and those "optical brighteners" and "color protectors" seal in dirt instead of removing it (which is why that shirt will seem clean, then stink after you've worn it half a day). You just can't have it both ways. So my delicates get an occasional wash in Country Save to get them really really clean. I also, now, have an awful washing machine that doesn't clean things very well. It's been worth ordering Country Save online to combat that. Oh and yes it works great in cold water. It's also better than a lot of the "soaps" and other big names in cloth diapering. Those "cottage" brands just don't have access to the same chemicals as these bigger brands and soap and detergent are different things. Clothes really need a detergent.
