Programs: At the Downtown Hope Center, we begin every morning with preparing approximately 300 lunches for hungry male and female guests. Majority of our guests are either homeless or live below the poverty line. Our lunches are made up of a beverage, a cup of homemade soup, a sandwich, and snack that are prepared and bagged by a team of amazingly dedicated volunteers and kitchen staff. 95% of the food you see in our kitchen is donated by local grocers, the Food Bank of Alaska or donated by individual donors. God always provides us with the ingredients we need. The Downtown Hope Center is funded by generous monthly donors, local churches, grants and foundations. Our Clothing Room is where you will find volunteers sorting through donations that typically consist of clothing items for both men and women and hygiene products for our Shower House. Monday-Friday volunteers will hand out clothing to any guest alongside personal mail, a cup of hot coffee, Christian devotional and pastry. Next to our Clothing Room is our Shower House, this is a place where outside guests can freshen up in one of our four showers and have their soiled clothing laundered. At night shower and laundry services are available to the women who stay in our shelter. Our Emergency Women’s Shelter provides a bed and three healthy meals to approximately 55 women each night who are overcoming addiction, healing from domestic violence and abuse, escaping from human trafficking or simply have nowhere else to safely go. These women are prayed over and with by our dedicated and compassionate shelter staff. As lunches are being handed out and clothes are being washed our 16-week job skill training program, Feed Me Hope, is in session. In the Bakery our Feed Me Hope students learn how to bake bread, cakes, cookies and sweet pastries. Students in this program help fill bakery orders placed by the general public and local Alaskan businesses. In the summer, our oven is always turned-on baking bulk baked goods for our Feed Me Hope Food Truck which helps our students practice customer service and learn entrepreneurial skills. To create a safe space away from men in the event that one of our students may have been previously abused, the Feed Me Hope Bakery program is only available to women. Our Feed Me Hope Culinary program is available to both male and female applicants. Feed Me Hope Culinary students are trained in kitchen prep work as they fulfill catering orders and prepare dinner for the women staying in our Shelter. Dinner is then served by volunteers. All of our programs include Life and Job Skill training and Trauma Care to help our students heal, overcome barriers and prepare for the workplace. On our rooftop rests a lush garden, where students can source local ingredients to produce delicious, fresh eats. Neighboring the Downtown Hope Center is Suite Hope, a Safe Place for Healing. Suite Hope is an apartment complex that offers transitional housing to students in the Feed Me Hope Program and housing to women in transition seeking a safe place to reconstruct their lives. Unfortunately, women who receive housing vouchers typically end up in the same communities they were abused, battled addictions or were sex trafficked in. Suite Hope is outside of these communities and is a place where women can feel safe, distanced from their abusers, drug dealers and sex traffickers. Our programs and services are possible because we serve a God of grace and mercy, a God who seeks to see His people restored, renewed and transformed.
