Causes: Ambulatory & Primary Health Care, Health, Hospitals

Mission: Guided by a belief that all our neighbors deserve equitable and generous access to healthcare, DuPage Health Coalition (DHC) has a twenty-year history of collaborative partnership with health, human service, and community leaders; co-creating an efficient, effective health safety net for those who live, work, and raise families in DuPage.

Results: COVID-19 highlights what we have always known; health disparities have devastating consequences, disproportionately harming families with limited income, people of color, and immigrants. DHC has responded to the pandemic by growing our programs, easing barriers to enrollment, and adding new services tailored to respond to COVID-19’s harms. We have partnered to provide more than 6,000 vaccines and 70,000 units of PPE. We know our strength lies in our capacity to work together on shared health equity aims and we are profoundly grateful to have earned the trust of our uninsured/underinsured neighbors.

Target demographics: We serve low-income, medically uninsured or under-insured county residents. With a median income of $25,989 (one quarter of DuPage County’s median household income of $104,466), our members are working poor adults. Our typical Access DuPage member is a parent in their forties, so our concern is both their health and the wellbeing of their families.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Last fiscal year we helped 5,329 clients through Access DuPage, 802 through Silver Access DuPage, and 2,630 through DuPage Dispensary of Hope. In addition we distributed more than 70,000 units of PPE and facilitated thousands of COVID-19 vaccinations. Our vaccine events target areas with lower vaccination rates and higher rates of COVID-19 infection.

Geographic areas served: Our programs assist low income residents of DuPage County, Illinois

Programs: Addressing health inequities since our inception; 65,000+ uninsured individuals have been served through our Access DuPage (AD) program alone. Our volunteer network includes every DuPage hospital, dozens of enrollment sites, and thousands of medical and community members. AD coordinates enrollment, specialty care referral and navigation services, and pays approximately 75% of medication costs for AD members. Every dollar of direct cost is matched by more than ten in contributed services. Last year alone, more than 34 million dollars in care was donated by partners. Post ACA we have grown our services to include Silver Access, an innovative ACA Premium Assistance Program, and the DuPage Dispensary of Hope (DDOH), a free pharmacy. In addition, building on proven success leading planning efforts, we work as a convenor, bringing together stakeholders to drive health care delivery system change which disrupts longstanding health disparities and entrenched barriers to healthcare. DHC collaborates with a diversified network of funding partners to achieve our aims. We are careful stewards of our resources with 95% of revenue going directly to patient care.
