This and a five gallon bucket has been my composting toilet system for the last 10 years. If you are still visiting the outhouse, listen up, here is my system for an indoor, water free, compost making toilet system:

First: I fill the bucket 1/3 full of forest duff : fir cones, needles, bark, any cellulose material. Then bring inside and put under my sink with a curtain to hide it. Pee and poop till full or until I want to empty it, which ever comes first.

Next: I empty it under a large ponderosa pine tree, rinse out the bucket with a bucket I keep by the sink and fill with grey water and food compost---meat, dairy, all food compost. Then I rake some pine needles over it all or shovel some compost over the top. I've been using the same tree for 10 years; the pile never gets too big nor does it ever smell. And since I mix poo with the food compost, the bears and coyotes don't bother the pile.

I have several poo buckets so I never need visit the tree until Its convenient. This system uses no water, produces top soil, and takes less than 10 minutes a week.

My inspiration for this system was from reading the Humanure Handbook.
