Speaker choices were limited in those days and amplifier manufacturers had to purchase products that were common to other applications. Usually, this meant a low-power speaker, often with an Alnico magnet, and limited cone and coil travel. Due to the nature of the speaker\'s construction, the sound of the guitar and amplifier combination was impacted by the speaker design. Amplified guitar was a bit more aggressive duty than most other speaker applications at the time and the speakers were frequently challenged in terms of their mechanical movement and linearity. Guitarist learned how to control this non-linearity and use the resulting tonal characteristics to their advantage. Speaker break-up became cool and was a desired feature by most guitarists. The great guitar tones we know now are a result of those events. Although there are a multitude of distinctive guitar speaker tones available today, they can be broken down into two main categories. We have Marshall and Celestion to thank for the distinctively \"British tones\" that we are so familiar with. Fender, Peavey, and SLM (Crate/Ampeg) worked with speaker companies like Eminence, Oxford, CTS, JBL, and Electro-Voice to establish tones that are distinctively \"American\". Eminence is proud to present the Patriot™ and Red Coat™ series of guitar speakers. Incorporating both British and American cone technology into speakers that are manufactured in the USA gives us the ability to provide you with virtually any tone you desire. Be it British or American, clean or dirty, big bass or screaming highs, we have a speaker that will allow you to \"Pick Your Sound\". Some reviewer hit the nail on the head, this speaker is close to Celestion V30s but less harsh. Well said!!! From personal experience I just don't care for the V30s much. For a while I have been on the search for my perfect cab.I believe you have to mix speakers to achieve an ultimate tone. No speaker is perfect and a 4x12 cab full of the exact same speaker is always going to have weak points IMO. My cab contains the Governor, a Man o War, and 2 Celestion GT75s. The Man O War is my highs, my GT75s are my mids, and the Governor is my lows. Thats how I like it, well rounded. I love my cab and wouldn't trade if for the world. Some may argue that you are going to only mic 1 speaker at a time. Maybe live (for the record if the sound man ever insists on micing just one speaker I make him put the mic on the Governor), but if you distant mic the cab for a recording, its A+!The Governor is punchy and clear. After breaking it in its a great sounding speaker that has been able to handle tons of abuse with ease. I had never tried Eminence speakers before and I must say my first buys with them were all incredible. I would highly suggest The Governor paired with a Man O War. A totally winning combo.Trust in Eminence. My experience with them so far has been wonderful. I was surprised I hadn't heard more about these speakers before. I still like Celestion, both they and Eminence make an amazing product, but I just think Eminence suits my needs a little beter.
