These Fender springs are very hard and stiff, but they need to be that way to apply enough pressure to hold the tremolo arm in a horizontal position. I tried using softer, more elastic springs, but they don't apply enough pressure to hold the arm in place.

The first time I tried a Fender spring, I screwed the tremolo arm in as far as it would go, and it compressed the spring permanently. The second time I tried it, I screwed the tremolo arm in until I felt just enough resistance to hold the arm in a horizontal position. Everything worked perfectly! When I removed the tremolo arm, the spring was still at its original length.

Apparently, the key to success with these springs is to avoid over-tightening the tremolo arm so that you don't over-compress the spring. If you tighten the arm just enough to get the job done, everything works exactly as Fender intended! Moreover, if you avoid over-tightening the arm, you won't have to worry about stripping the threads, which is a much more serious problem.
