Mission: Fleet of Angels is a one-of-a-kind nonprofit organization that offers a wide range of emergency services for at-risk animals. Focusing primarily on equines, services include crisis management for large equine-related emergency events; facilitating emergency evacuations and related services during natural disasters; safe home placement of at-risk equines; discounted or free transportation of at-risk and/or adopted equines; a variety of other services that save at-risk equines from abuse, abandonment, injury, starvation, or slaughter by providing direct support, feed, shelter, equipment, or funds to aid those animals, their rescuers, adopters, or owners. FOA also provides educational opportunities to help members of the public learn to better care for and protect equines and other animals, and to be responsible owners and members of the animal protection community. Results: Fleet of Angels' currently has over 7500 registered members who offer services of: emergency transporting of equines put at risk by humans, evacuating of equines put at risk by natural disasters, emergency stabling while 'waiting out the storm', hay and supply banks for equine victims of natural disasters, adoption/placement of displaced equines in long term homes, search and rescue, veterinary and farrier services, education related to equine care and protection, and other services that help save equine lives. - - - FOA has evacuated countless horses from each of six major hurricanes: Sandy (Cat 1,2012), Matthew (Cat 4,2016), Irma (Cat 4,2017), Harvey (Cat 4,2017), Florence (Cat 4,2018), Michael (Cat 4,2018) - - - Since the launch of Fleet of Angels as a grassroots movement in 2012, we have provided lifesaving services for over 12,000 at-risk equines. - - - In 2016-18, Fleet of Angels was the facilitating organization in the largest rescue of horses in history. After being asked for help by the South Dakota State Attorney, FOA took both physical and financial responsibility for 907 horses after they had been found by the state to be starving and neglected at the ISPMB 'sanctuary' in SD. Within 22 months- with staff, volunteers and vets working incredibly long hours, the horses had been fed to a healthy weight, hundreds of stallions had been gelded, dozens of horses with hooves up to 16" too long had been trimmed, horses with injuries were treated, and the horses were all adopted in groups of two or more to good, adoptive homes*. (*A small number of horses that had injuries (broken bones, etc. ) or irreparable conditions resulting from the abuse and which could not be reversed by veterinarians enough to make the horse comfortable, were allowed to escape a life of pain by being humanely euthanized by the attending veterinarians. ) - - - Because of the number of successful life-saving missions Fleet of Angels facilitates each year, the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (ASPCA) created the Equine Welfare Award specifically for Fleet of Angels in 2017-18.That award is now a part of ASPCA's annual prestigious animal rescue awards event. - - - Everyone who'd like to become a Fleet of Angels member is invited to register at www.
