painfully boring, tried hard to get through half of it, but couldn't care about the characters, there was no real story, the dog wasn't even compelling

I struggled with the beginning of this book, thought the first few chapters were boring and pointless. I perservered though and towards the end, I didn't want to put it down. There was one time I felt the author put his little friend in danger by deciding to hike in bad weather, but it was made clear throughout the book how much Tom loves Atticus and Max. I was very touched by his loyalty to Max and his love for Atticus. I enjoyed his emotional journey of coming to terms with his father's life and loving him in the end. I look forward to reading Will's Red coat next.

I chose this book due to all the five star reviews, and because I enjoy a good animal story every now and then. I know I will be in the minority here, but this book just really wasn't a five star read for me at all. I wanted to like the book. Unfortunately, I just could not finish it. While initially I found the story to be somewhat charming, I quickly became disinterested in it due to its very repetitive nature. About halfway through I began to feel like it was a chore to try and finish it. After the third time of checking it out from the library, I finally just gave up.

What a GREAT book! My brother recommended it and I'm so glad he did. I read it to my husband and we laughed and cried over it. We grew up in the area and have spent time in the mountains of New Hampshire so we are familiar with the settings of the story. I have told every I know who likes to read that they need to read this book. Thank you Atticus and Tom.

I really enjoyed this book especially because I knew the area where the author lived and I had hiked all the mountains that he talked about in the book. Without that the book still would’ve been good but with that the book was absolutely excellent!

Very good book. Really enjoyed the adventures of Tom and Atticus. The chapters leading to their adventures gave great meaning to what they were accomplishing.

One is told there is a strong bond between people and their dogs, but I don't think anything can top the bond between Tom Ryan and his dog Atticus. I followed their good and bad times, laughing and crying. But Tom's eloquent and from-the-heart writing, took me along with Atticus and him on their hikes in the mountains. Even if you are not a lover of dogs, this is still a must reading to realize anything is possible if you have faith in yourself and your companion (dog or otherwise). I did not want to delete it from my device so I could always go back, read a few pages, and become inspired for the day.

Dog comes to life under a tender pen. Beautifully captures the ultimate union of a dog and his man. Would have loved to meet this amazing dog, but I honestly feel that I could be in possession of his sister!

I loved the details of the White Mountains and the hikes. You really become a part of the story and feel like you know the characters throughout. I would recommend this to anyone who loves dogs or hiking and the outdoors. It's an incredible story for all who read.

I was so sad when I finished the story. Tom and Atticus took me along on one hiking highlight after another. Great read for outdoor lovers and dog fanciers alike!

Careful! Anyone who thinks a dog isn’t a “person” may find his or her beliefs challenged! My friend and I laughed and cried together as we shared a road trip and climbed peaks with Atticus and Tom.
