Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: We provide a healthy, loving home for unwanted and neglected chinchillas with permanent housing in our rescue and through adoptions. We educate/council the public about the physical and emotional needs of chinchillas so they learn how to provide these animals with a healthy, safe and happy life. We provide awareness of the hardships and mass breeding of chinchillas on ranches for pelting and the pet industry. In addition, we enlighten the public about the plight of the wild chinchilla in their natural habitat.

Results: Since we opened our doors in 2003 we have rescued over 680 chinchillas. Many were in a neglectful or dangerous environment. All the chinchillas receive medical care and are now living in healthy, clean and loving homes with new guardians through adoption or are permanent residence here at the rescue. Because we have rescued so many older, physically and socially challenged chinchillas, we have become a SANCTUARY and permanent home for many of our chinchillas. Some need ongoing medical care for their health issues. We rescue on a regular basis for as many chinchillas as we can. It is an ongoing journey to educate people about the harmful effect of breeding and pet stores selling these animals. We spend time with all the chinchillas to help heal and rehabilitate them to be able to trust people and show their wonderful, spirited and intelligent personality. We provide education about chinchilla care to current chinchilla guardians and those interested in becoming new chinchilla parents. Over the years we have periodically expanded our rescue and we are now one of the largest full time, rescue only (we do not breed) chinchilla rescues in the US.

Target demographics: We travel throughout the Northeast region of the United States.

Geographic areas served: CT, MA, NH, VT, RI, Southern Maine, Eastern NY, Eastern PA

Programs: We provide consultations by phone & email for sick chinchillas or general chinchilla care. We have helped chin parents around the world when a second opinion or guidance is needed to care for their chinchillas. We also do courtesy listing for adoptions on our site for chinchillas that are still living with their guardians or are outside of our area. As part of the courtesy listing, we will screen all potential adopters for the guardians to help them make the best decision in finding a new home for their chinchillas. We have an online store which sells many safe chinchilla products and items for chinchilla parents. Many of the items are hand made by us. All proceeds from the sales go into funding to provide for health care, food, housing and daily needs of the chinchillas. Because chinchillas can have challenging medical conditions, we are often limited as to how they can be treated. We make great effort to learn from any experience we have and continually update information onto our web site to help other chinchillas who may benefit from new medical advances.
