It does not usually relate directly to the tension that the stringer sets his machine. The large tension scale is easy to read. It is accurate at measuring tension loss over time and is a useful tool to determine when you should consider getting the racquet restrung. Just take a reading of the string tension when you get your racquet restrung and then test again over the next few weeks. You will get to know when the racquet isn\'t playing right and the STT will confirm your suspicions.Weight1 lbsDimensions6 × 6 × 4 inStringing Machine TypeRacquet Testing EquipmentTennis Accessories TypeMisc/Various 12616136 3.4100lbs 0.00 0.00 0.00

It has the utility of a $200 tension measuring instrument in that the measurement may not be accurate, but it will be consistent. It will return the same result ten, fifteen and twenty minutes from now. Its intended use is to help you decide when to replace your strings before they severely affect your game.It isn't to check the accuracy of your stringing machine or your tennis shop stringer. That said, a week after I restrung my racquet to 55, the Gamma STT measured 55. An iPhone app said the tension was 36.3 lb. The racquet plays like 55.

When I go through reviews before making a decision to purchase, I always try to find out the reason behind the 1-star reviews: is it because the product does not work as described, or is it because the reviewer had the wrong expectations? In this case, the vast majority of the 1-star reviewers never bothered to understand what it is actually for.It is a simple, affordable device to monitor the loss in string tension over time. You should not expect to use it to verify the string tension measured in lb/kg on that newly re-stringed racquet you got back from the pro shop. When I tried it on the six racquets on hand, four stringed by a pro shop, two stringed by myself (using a Gamma X-ELS), the numbers were not far from the tension requested at the time of re-stringing and the order from the lowest to the highest matched exactly the order of the requests.

This measures the loss of tension over time. That means you need a base reading at the time it is strung. Without that the measurement is meaningless. It does not accurately measure the tension on the string with a single measurement.

I just had my racquet restrung with Synthetic Gut at 52 by a professional stringer. I used this gauge on the new stringbed and it indicated very close to 52. if you insert it into a square of strings that are close together, it's easier to get an accurate read. After reading all the 1 star reviews, I don't understand how they all had so much trouble. This gauge is not a professional instrument nor is it represented as one. When I turned the dial, I suppose I could have believed the tension to be anything between 50-52 - I knew mine was at 52. But that is still pretty good for a $20 gauge. This will be a great tool to monitor the tension and replace the strings when they get below 45.
