Mission: Global Partners for Development works directly with community leaders in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to identify and implement development projects in the areas of education and public health. Our mission is to advance locally-led initiatives that improve education and public health in East Africa. That means supporting schools and community-based organizations to manage education and public health interventions that generate lasting change for local people. Our partnerships are essential to the realization of our mission. In our experience, working directly with local communities not only promotes human dignity, but also empowers people to break the vicious cycle of poverty. We value the insight of community leaders and school management committees on the real needs at hand and the best methods for tackling them. Our vision is grounded in the belief that local people are the key to responsible development. We envision a world where even disenfranchised communities have the capacity to build sustainable solutions to the problems they face. Our approach is to partner with local communities to identify, implement, and sustain projects that improve education and public health in rural East Africa.

Target demographics: Communities through Community-Driven Development

Geographic areas served: East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania)

Programs: Construction of clean water supply systems, hygiene education and latrine construction. Contaminated water is responsible for a myriad of health problems including typhoid, cholera and parasitic infections. Women and children walk miles each way carrying heavy containers of water. Gathering just 20 liters of water can take up to nine hours a day; this amount is only sufficient for one household for two days and just for cooking food. Reducing the amount of work that women have to devote to water collection improves the economic situation by giving them time to use for other more economically useful purposes. Hygiene education teaches people to avoid diseases that currently flourish because of lack of clean water.

A rural African schoolgirl faces many educational challenges and copes with the burden of her responsibilities at home. Her graduation from secondary school is a victory in the face of overwhelming odds. To support these girls and help them realize their dreams, Global Partners created an education fund. This scholarship program now includes university, pre-university and college (nursing, teaching, vocational) as well as lower secondary education. We are committed to helping young women realize their full potential.

Global Partners’ Emergency Fund allows us to respond quickly to immediate needs, disasters, and crises in the regions where we work. True to our ethos, we partner directly with communities and local leaders to ensure that our response is relevant and sustainable. Global Partners occasionally comes across schools that need immediate assistance due to their dire needs. For example, Kotieno Primary School’s roof was blown off during a storm, and the special needs students were sleeping on the floor since the school had no beds for them. With the help of our generous donors, Global Partners funded a new roof, installed special latrines for students with disabilities, and purchased beds and mattresses for the students at this Kenyan School. Unfortunately, these types of situations are all too common. Our staff and partners are approached by schools whose only useable latrines are in danger of collapse, whose walls are literally falling down, and even those who have been officially condemned. Our Emergency Fund allows us to immediately respond to schools with extremely dangerous conditions to ensure that the schools remain open. We recognize that the most vulnerable are often disproportionately affected by humanitarian crises. This fund also enables us, when feasible, to respond to crises like COVID-19 and the swarms of locusts that are currently invading East Africa.
