I am going to take a guess that this device uses a tuned (resonant frequency) Piezo Electric crystal to sense the unique sound (frequency) created by the actuation of the fuel injector(s). Perhaps the device senses the injector closure or opening . . . or both. If the crystal detects the injector(s) doing their job, the signal created is passed on to an amplifier that amplifies and conditions the signal to create a beep in a speaker and illuminates a lamp within the tool. I have used this tool on a couple of vehicles and as far as I can tell, it is dead on. All this is a guess on my part, but it is my conjecture and I am sticking to it! I like the tool! By the way, some engine knock sensors work similarly.
