A must if you're planning a trip to Oregon!! Describes trailmarkers, landmarks, difficulty accurately. Gives the best information on where to park, nearby trails to connect to, maps, pictures of falls...great book!! Also recommend the app 34;AllTrails34; however, bring this book with you as phones don't always connect on some trails.

I bought this guide for a family “waterfall chase” through central Oregon. SO GLAD I DID!! You can get a lot of info online about hikes, but this is an excellent, thorough resource that gave me more detailed info when planning our trip. Plus, when too much snow on the roads canceled some of our plans, and we had no signal on our cell phones, THIS GUIDE was a huge help in making other plans! There are (color!) pictures of most of the waterfalls mentioned, which is also super helpful in determining which to visit. A great guide!

Good maps and good descriptions of trail conditions for each waterfall. What is sadly lacking is the caliber of photos provided for each waterfall. They look like someone pulled out a point and shoot camera and took all of 10 seconds to snap a shot of the waterfall. If you want to get a sense of the photographic potential of any of these waterfalls you will need to go online. The author states that he wanted to show the waterfalls in a natural manner. Frankly this is a lame excuse for his laziness. Many photographers would donate their images for a book such as this if they were merely given credit for the image. The author states that he did no processing of the digital images with Photoshop and this is also obvious to the extreme. What he fails to understand is that in the days of film cameras an image would be exposed by the photographer and then a lab would do the development of the film and make the prints. With a digital camera the image files created also need to be 34;developed34; to be able to show any scene in a realistic manner. I bought this book as an aid in trip planning but with the terrible pictures provided it provides little real help in this regard. This is one book that should not have been printed but produced as an e-book with links to an image repository that could be updated over time. I read reviews by others before purchasing this book and comments about the great pictures. I cannot believe anyone could honestly consider a single image to be of passable quality so have to question the honesty of the reviewer.

I've been using Hiking Waterfalls in Oregon (A Falcon Guide) by Adam Sawyer to find hiking trails leading to waterfalls for several years now. I really like this guide because it provides good directions to the trailheads as well good descriptions of the hikes and what to expect on the hikes. The maps of the trails are also quite nice providing a realistic idea of what the hike will entail. The photos are nicely done and add a bit of enticement for many of the hikes. The estimated time the hikes will take are fairly accurate though this does depend on one's fitness ability. I'm not sure how accurate the difficulty scale is because I think there's a large amount of subjectivity involved again. I found some of the easy hikes more difficult than I expected and some of the difficult hikes easier than I expected. Overall, though, this is my go-to guide when I'm searching for a hike, particularly because I love hikes that include waterfalls.
