Mission: Preservation of delaware history. The society's primary goal is the preservation of history, particularly the history relating to the state of delaware. The society maintains two museums, a library, and several other historic buildings providing cultural and educational services to the community.

Programs: Research library - houses the historical society's paper-based collection which is available to persons researching delaware history.

delaware history museum - the museum presents the history of delaware through permanent and rotating exhibitions. Classrooms, exhibition galleries and other spaces enable historical society education staff to present education programs, lectures, and guided tours focused on delaware history.

read house & gardens - the national landmark property serves as an early federal-era museum presenting social and cultural history through guided tours and public programs.

old town hall - historic, restored 18th century building used for rotating exhibitions and community education programs. History education program - the historical society sponsors exhibitions, adult, family, and school programs in history education at two campuses and through outreach initiatives. School teachers can avail themselves of more than ten programs on delaware history, while lectures, symposia, film series, and reading groups enable lifelong learners to engage in the study and understanding of delaware history. Delaware history journal - the semi-annual publication is devoted to scholarly research and articles on delaware history. Collection stewardship/management program - more than three million objects and items comprise the permanent collection of the historical society of delaware. A professional staff curates the permanent collection for public use by reasearchers, for reference and publication, for loan to other museums and for use in interpretive exhibitions. Jane and littleton mitchell center for african american heritage - the mitchell center collects, preserves, researches, and interprets for public enrichment the history and heritage of delaware's african americans through exhibitions, publications, lectures, and public programs.
