Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Rescue, fostering and adoption of homeless dogs and cats; low-cost spay and neuter programs in grand and san juan counties; free spay/neuter for pets of families in need; community cat tnr program; free pet food for owners in need; community education.

Programs: We place homeless animals into permanent homes. We work closely with the moab city animal shelter. The moab animal shelter accepts most surrendered animals so that the limited number of hsmv foster homes can care primarily for special-needs or very young animals. Foster agreements are required with specific criteria including bringing fostered animals to adoption days. Hsmv spay/neuters all shelter and foster animals, advertises shelter and fostered dogs/cats in the local papers and on social media, and provides staff and volunteers to transport animals to adoption days four saturdays each month. Signed adoption agreements are required along with an adoption fee. Hsmv has significantly decreased and stabilized shelter intakes through spay/neuter. We are a no-kill community. Our spay/neuter program increases adoptability at the shelter and targets owners most at risk for letting their pets reproduce. We believe that affordable access to spay/neuter is the key to saving lives and reducing shelter deaths.

community and feral cat program: we currently provide food and medical services for cat colonies. Volunteers oversee colonies in and near moab by placing food and water, trapping reproducing cats and transporting them to a veterinarian. Cats are neutered or spayed and returned to their colony (tnr = trap neuter return). Our program addresses overpopulation of homeless cats, reduces fighting and associated health issues, and keeps cats out of shelters.

low cost spay/neuter programs: hsmv subsidizes public low-cost spay and neuter clinics in grand county (4 per year). The moab veterinary clinic and mill creek animal hospital provide discounted services to clients and hsmv pays a portion of the cost. We also subsidize spay/neuter incentive program (snip): free spay/neuter for pets of families in need. We receive some funding for this program from no more homeless pets in utah.
