Mission: The Icarus Foundation, Inc. dba Chesapeake Parrot Sanctuary is a small 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Annapolis, MD. Our mission is to protect and prevent the suffering of parrots in captivity by providing rescue and sanctuary to abused, neglected and unwanted companion parrots, and by advocating on their behalf. Our primary focus is on providing a lifetime of care for cockatoos. Many cockatoo owners and enthusiasts agree that cockatoos bring with them many unique challenges. We are a Life Care Community for cockatoos and other parrots, and as such we provide these beautiful intelligent and social birds with a life filled with choices, respect and love. Our birds are allowed to live as birds with others of their own kind and are served a fresh wholesome diet of veggies, grains, greens, fruits, nuts and pellets. All of our avian residents receive quality veterinary care from a board certified avian vet.

Results: In our first 5 years, the Chesapeake Parrot Sanctuary has helped countless captive parrots and parrot owners by providing a safe haven for previously neglected, abused and unwanted parrots, as well as through adoption, referrals and education. With tens of millions of captive exotic birds currently living in the U. S. , the need for rescue and permanent sanctuary is great and the need continues to grow as parrots are one of the most frequently abandoned of all companion animals and have a lifespan of 20 to 80 years! Our goal is to grow our sanctuary and expand our public outreach so that we can continue to help as many of these very social and highly intelligent birds as possible.
