Target demographics: communities living in poverty
Direct beneficiaries per year: 13 farmer cooperative groups by helping them process & sell 572,000 lbs of organic peanuts, 1.2 million lbs of organic sesame and 28,500 lbs of organic coffee. We made low-interest loans totaling $992,064 to farmers and cooperatives. We treated 9,939 patients at the Health Clinic, saw 145 patients with chronic illnesses monthly, cared for 77 elderly patients in their homes, provided birth control for 103 women, did 1,795 ultrasounds, 365 EKGs, and 189 echocardiograms. Our orthopedist treated 1,662 patients. We gave out treatment and medication at no cost to patients to treat 20,802 conditions and diseases. We completed 5,020 laboratory tests and sent 2,000 tests to outside labs. Our dental program saw 4,270 patients, performed 6,050 procedures of which 56% were preventative, 25% were restorative & only 9% were extractions. Dental staff taught 25 dental hygiene classes to 2,968 children and did fluoride treatments. Our vision clinic saw 281 patients and handed out 416 pairs of glasses.

Programs: A community Health Clinic seeing 100 patients a day & providing services of pediatrics, ob/gyn, radiology, orthopedics, dental, ultrasounds, laboratory, pharmacy, eyeglasses & counseling; Public health education, home visits & home health kits via 30 lay health promoters in most vulnerable urban & rural areas; Ongoing chronic illness care for patients with diabetes, hypertension, asthma, epilepsy & Parkinsons; and support for HIV positive patients, at-risk youth, pregnant women, new mothers, LGBT community. Sustainable agriculture: we work with 3,000 organic farmers from all over Western Nicaragua growing organic peanuts, sesame, coffee & cotton. We help establish relationships with buyers, process raw agricultural product via our sesame processing plant and cotton gin, and source accessible financing for planting, harvesting, crop collection and processing. Sustainable Economic Development: We work with Nicaraguans to set up worker-owned businesses, providing training, financing and marketing support. We currently work with a sesame processing plant providing employment for 50 people full time and with a woodworking shop employing 4 people full time making furniture out of sustainably harvested wood. Education: We work to educate those in the global north about realities in Nicaragua, receiving 150 volunteers annually to work short-term in our projects and learn.
