Mission: The Junior League of Phoenix is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. JLP's focus is on fighting hunger in the Greater Phoenix Community. The Junior League of Phoenix, along with a coalition of community partners, is working towards a food secure community through access, empowerment, and education.

Results: Junior League members have the opportunity through annual committee placements to apply their training and skills to internal League programs and events; as well as to take these skills out into the community. Recently, Junior League members have been involved in non-profits as executive directors or other leadership staff and volunteer positions in the Phoenix community including Ronald McDonald House, Phoenix Komen for the Cure, Arizona Humane Society’s Compassion with Fashion, Girls Scouts of Arizona, the Foundation for Blind Children and many more. Our trained volunteers have also been founding members of many local chapters of National Charity League. Over the past 10 years, Junior League members have served as event chairs for major community events including Children’s Museum of Phoenix annual gala, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man & woman of the Year campaign, Panhellenic Centennial, Valley of the Sun United Way Executive Committee, Beach Ball, pARTy, The Emily Center Luncheon, PANDA Luncheon, Science Center’s Galaxy Gala, HomeBase Luncheon, Heart Ball, Desert Foundation Auxiliary, Board of Visitors and many more.

Target demographics: Empower women to strengthen the community and help underserved people.

Geographic areas served: The 2nd largest county in the country: Maricopa County in the greater Phoenix metro area.

Programs: Junior League members have supported the greater Phoenix community by volunteering more than 100,000 hours at numerous events, which have made an impact on various community organizations. In addition to these partner relationships, members also have supported Junior League of Phoenix's Annual Rummage Sale, which is known as Arizona's Largest "Garage" Sale. This event has been a valley tradition for the 80 plus years.

Kids in the Kitchen focuses on increasing children's awareness of the nutrition in everyday foods, improving the quality of healthy food that kids eat by showing them easy and tasty ways to eat better, and increasing the amount of exercise that kids do during their daily routine. The Kids in the Kitchen programs involve many exciting hands-on components to get kids and families involved in learning how to be healthy. Programming focuses on four components led by league and community volunteers: chef presentation: students will create simple, healthy snacks with chef presenters. Eat this not that: an instructional presentation helping students choose healthy alternatives at popular restaurants and fast food chains. Food plate: an instruction of the food plate (the successor of the food pyramid) and how much food one should eat from each category in relation to their plates. Exercise: participation in 45 minutes of low-key and fun exercises to promote an active lifestyle. Kids also get to take home activity packets and recipes to continue their learning.

ROCKETS - Raising Our Children's Knowledge by Educating Through Science is a theme-based program that promotes early childhood development of science skills. The program provides hands-on science activities, supplemented with math lessons, to at-risk children in Maricopa County to help foster problem solving, critical thinking, and exploration skills that are critical to future academic success. The rockets program offers monthly classroom lessons for preschool and early elementary students and their parents. The program typically includes an introduction to the science lessons, followed by the science lessons, and a craft or healthy snack lesson. The curriculum is reinforced with a quiz to verify comprehension and a student take-home bag that includes a fun science-related toy and work activities that support the classroom lesson. Each classroom event engages an average of 300 children and families.

As well as interactive exhibits including a healthy iron chef kids challenge implemented by the current Junior League Kids in the Kitchen program, obstacle courses and exercise classes to promote physical activity at home, an exhibit on eating healthy on a budget, a garden area to teach families about growing their own healthy foods, myplate and portion size overview, exhibits on moderation (especially around sugar) and passports to make sure that the patrons are attending all of the educational exhibits. The goals of this health fair include: increase awareness of the nutrition in everyday foods, improve the quality of healthy food that families eat by showing them easy and tasty ways to eat better, increase the amount of exercise that kids do during their daily routine and increase activity in adults. Improve participants' attitudes regarding the importance of making healthy food and lifestyle choices. Program objective: the health fest wants to empower the community to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.
