Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation, Water, Water Resources, Wetlands Conservation & Management

Mission: Conserving the natural heritage of the kenai peninsula for future generations.

Target demographics: Preserve irreplacable fish, bird and wildlife habitat and recreational lands for the future

Geographic areas served: Founded in 1989, KHLT was the first land trust in Alaska and is based in Homer, servicing the Kenai Peninsula

Programs: The Land Trust works with private landowners and provides land conservation, land management, and land stewardship services. Through this work, KHLT preserves special places for communities – important cultural and recreational lands. Current projects include; Kenai Mountains to Sea collaborative – working with partners on a large landscape project to connect already protected salmon streams in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge to the ocean;Baby Salmon Live Here program – installing informational signs in places across the Kenai Peninsula where juvenile salmon live and need to survive. The long-term vision of the initiative is to become statewide, with each Alaskan land trust managing their region. The goal is to increase awareness that often salmon are all around us, which will, in turn, increase habitat conservation support;Anchor River Salmon Conservation Area – working to increase conservation acreage on the Anchor River to help ensure there will be salmon in our rivers far into the future;Stariski Creek – KHLT’s Stariski Estuary and Meadows properties on Stariski Creek north of Anchor Point will never be developed or subdivided and will instead be preserved for fish and wildlife habitat, as well as hiking, wildlife viewing, and fishing access.
