Programs: Kenai Watershed Forum programs include Research, Education and Outreach, and Restoration.
Research programs vary from remote sensing mapping of wetlands and changes at the landscape scale from both human and natural events to monitoring water quality and quantity of streams. We are also working to identify and document salmon habitat that has not be registered with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Education and outreach - Employees 3 dedicated staff, 2 work directly with K-12 students through the Adopt-a-stream program. In 2007, more than 11,500 student contact hours were logged. In addition we administer and provide support for the Caring for the Kenai contest. Adult education opportunities are provided by staff at the Kenai River Center and through free community lectures and field trips. Did we mention the Kenai River Festival? This signature event has over 4,000 in attendance, the second weekend of June every year. Restoration program - primarily focus on reconnected aquatic habitat that has been fragmented through poor road construction or lack of upkeep. We occasionally will work on direct stream bank impacts and have recently been focusing on invasive weeds that are known or suspected to have adverse affects on salmon habitat.
