Mission: The Landing Theatre Company is dedicated to advancing American Theatre through the cultivation of extraordinary American playwriting and presenting American works that have significant artistic worth to our community, our culture and our history.
Target demographics: American playwrights and local theatre artists
Direct beneficiaries per year: We reach two main groups through our work: Local Theatre Artists and American playwrights. For Local Theatre Artists we’re known for inclusion, and telling stories that reflect the broad spectrum of American life. We are not about one group’s identity or one kind of theatre, but the collective impact of storytelling that expands our definition of ourselves as an eclectic community. When we talk about American, we mean America the way it actually looks. And we often choose challenging work that gives our audiences meaningful experiences that linger with them. For playwrights we try to provide as many opportunities to help them develop and showcase their work as we can, because we believe that plays are the central foundation for all storytelling in the theatre, and there can never be too many programs to help playwrights develop their work. But we are not simply facilitating these plays, but actively looking to share with our community what's next in American Theatre.
Geographic areas served: Houston, Texas
Programs: Focused exclusively on American playwriting, the Landing produces a season of 3-4 plays a year. Since 2010, The Landing Theatre Company has helped develop 23 new plays, while producing 17 full productions, including 6 world premieres and 12 original short plays, employed over 800 artists, and received 21 nominations for awards, winning 5 of them. * The Landing annually hosts the New American Voices Play Reading Series, which showcases four new plays chosen from blind submissions by American playwrights. Selected playwrights have come from all across America, including Austin TX, Chicago IL, Brooklyn NY, Santa Barbara CA, Honolulu, HI Indianapolis IN, Portland OR, Boston MA, Philadelphia PA, Alexandria VA, New York NY, Hollywood CA, Northampton MA, Seattle WA, Washington DC, Astoria NY, Minneapolis MN, Madison WI, and Bronx NY. * We’ve created Landing Local: New Works Initiative to provide programs that will benefit the local playwriting community. These programs have included Micro Theatre projects for locally written new plays in site-specific environments, and a Developmental Reading Series, which features readings of top plays by local playwrights. * The company has also provided an internship program, which to date has provided hand-on opportunities for 21 university students and 5 high school students, from Houston, Austin, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah and Louisiana.
