Causes: Congregate Meals, Food, Human Services, Soup Kitchens
Mission: In the 1960s Louise Benson, the "Mother Teresa of San Jose, " served peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the hungry from her garage. She saw the need grow and in 1981 she and five good friends started a soup and sandwich mission at its present facility on the grounds of Sacred heart Church in San Jose, California. Since then thousands of volunteers from schools and churches of all denominations, along with individual donors, have supported Louise Benson's concept of feeding the hungry in our community on a no questions asked basis and in an atmosphere of loving concern. Martha's Kitchen networks with other helping agencies by sharing surplus produce and baked goods collected by volunteers.
Target demographics: Feeding the hungry with dignity.
Direct beneficiaries per year: This past year we have served nearly 1 million people through our hot/frozen meal services and our grocery distribution program.
Geographic areas served: Santa Clara, San Benito, Merced, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Madera, Fresno
Programs: Food is a basic need, not a luxury. At Martha's Kitchen, we fulfill this need for those who are most vulnerable to food insecurity in our community. In 2020, the number of hungry in our communities has increased significantly. The amount of meals provided by Martha's Kitchen on a weekly basis has increased by 100%. By the end of 2020, Martha's Kitchen will have served over 1,000,000 prepared meals and have distributed over 2,000,000 pounds of groceries in and around the Bay Area. Martha’s Kitchen currently distributes 100,000 hot meals and 250,000 pounds of groceries each month to our partners/community. During these challenging times, Martha's Kitchen has provided more meals, more services, and more groceries to those in need every month. Please consider supporting Martha's Kitchen!
