Mission: We work for positive, constructive solutions to help stabilize the lives of homeless people and provide them an opportunity to become productive citizens.   Our work addresses the underlying causes of homelessness: the lack of housing, income, social services, and civil rights.   We take a leadership role ensuring implementation of homeless assistance and rights programs while advancing solutions to homelessness, providing a voice to the over three million Americans who are homeless each year.

Programs: We focus our efforts on crucial efforts including our:
Civil Rights Project - work to end the disturbing trend in communities nationally to punish people for being homeless, while cultivating positive community responses to homelessness.
Surplus Property Project - work with grassroots homeless groups nationally to help them convert vacant federal properties into housing, job training, and childcare facilities for homeless people.
Homeless Children's Education Project - work to ensure homeless children access to a public school education, as required by federal law.
DC Homelessness Prevention Project - work to remove barriers homeless District residents face in accessing vital welfare support services that they need to gain employment and become productive members of society.
