Programs: Neighborhood place of puna (npp) is a child abuse and neglect prevention program serving puna and hilo. Npp provides intensive (weekly) and ongoing (6-12 months) in-home support to families at risk for child abuse and neglect. The supports are based on the six protective factors which have shown to minimize the risk for maltreatment. Of those six factors, our main focus is on teaching/modeling developmentally appropriate parenting skills and helping the family develop a strong and extensive community support network. In fiscal year 2016-2017, neighborhood place of puna (npp) served 58 total families with 166 children, of which 61 were five years of age or younger. 100% had no reported incidents of child abuse and neglect. Over 288 requests for information from the community were received. Npp's emergency food pantry provided food to 4,002 individuals, of which 1,452 were children (398 of which were five years of age or younger).
