I make a mixture for my breakfast that is supposed to be excellent for controlling cholesterol. It contains oats, barley, wheat germ, wheat bran, flax meal and raisins. I had been cooking barley. Cooked barley does not keep well before it goes bad. These flakes are so very much easier to deal with. I mix them with the oats in a container, then use just like you would oatmeal. I don't cook my mixture. I just let the liquid (milk or kefir) soften the oats and barley.
