Causes: Human Services

Mission: Pratthanadee's mission is to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged women and girls in Thailand by empowering them through personal and career development services.

Results: The Pratthanadee Foundation (PTND) has been providing services to underprivileged women and girls in Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani in the rural Isaan region of northeast Thailand since it was founded in 2000.PTND exists to empower women and girls by providing access to free career guidance, personal development, skills-based training, and mentoring. Our programs are offered within a safe and supportive environment, aiming to improve economic opportunities, encourage healthy life choices, and promote access to safe and meaningful work. PTND runs weekly trainings for women in Bangkok and also runs outreach training in high schools across Ubon Ratchathani and surrounding provinces. Our work with women is in-depth, and helps them to rebuild confidence, self-esteem, and individual mastery of their life situation, allowing them to affect change in their own lives. Our work with girls is a preventative training approach for teens, reaching them before they leave home and move to the city for work. It empowers them to plan their futures and understand the options for education and work that lay ahead. Since our founding, we have reached over 10,000 women and girls in Bangkok and 15,500 girls in Ubon Ratchathani with our impactful and life changing trainings. After completing our program, 45% of our students report an average salary increase of 30%. Furthermore, 88% of students say that PTND had given them useful, transferable skills; 85% think that joining a PTND program has increased their self-confidence; and 97% say that PTND has changed their life for the better. The strength and impact of our programs were recognized in 2014 when the Rockefeller Foundation and the Resource Alliance awarded us Thai NGO of the Year. As well, PTND was recently awarded the 2017 Social Impact Awards for "Big Impact, Small Budget. "

Target demographics: Virtually all of disadvantaged women with whom Pratthanadee works have never finished high school, have migrated to Bangkok from poorer rural provinces in search of employment to support their family, are single or separated/divorced and have to support their parents and children back home. For those who are currently employed, the majority of the women find themselves in informal employment characterized by unstable income and poor working conditions (e. g. factories, construction, and temporary jobs, including work in the sex trade).
