Mission: It is the mission of Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan to help abandoned, surrendered and homeless animals. We are purpose driven with a moral obligation to maintain or restore a healthy quality of life by providing rescue and placing them in an approved, suitable and safe foster or forever homes by legal means. Along with educating the general public about rescue programs, responsible dog ownership, and pet overpopulation. Affording security screened inmates with an opportunity to train these dogs. Collectively constituting a form of rehabilitation for both to reenter society as productive members with the encouragement of bringing positive attributes to the lives of others. We do this as a vehicle to enhance the lives of animals and the families in our community while working with governmental agencies and animal shelters in neighboring communities and neighboring states.
Results: RPSM has helped and adopted out over 1,000 dogs after they complete 10 weeks of training to learn their basic commands.
Target demographics: dogs in shelters that would otherwise be euthanized.

Programs: Founded in 2007 RPSM has made a serious effort to effectively aid in the reduction of euthanasia rates at many animal shelters. In 2008, the RPSM Correctional Companion Program began. In a partnership with the Coldwater Prison Complex, RPSM endeavors to find homes for dogs in shelters that would otherwise be euthanized. Dogs selected for the Companion Program are carefully screened for temperament, trainability, and adoptability. They are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered prior to enrollment in the program. Once they arrive at the complex, they are assigned to specially trained inmates who are responsible for their training and day to day care. Upon completion of the program, the dogs are ready to receive a canine good citizen certificate (CGC) and available for adoption into an approved home.
