I'm feeling pretty smart and happy right now after replacing the FVS by myself! I read several recommendations on how to reset the FVS on this particular unit but one thing was left out in the instructions.
1. Turn the gas supply valve off
2. Switch the power button on the unit to off and make sure the temperature dial is set to the lowest possible temperature
3. Unplug the water heater.
4. Remove the FVS as instructed
5. Replace with the new one as instructed
6. Turn the gas valve back on
7. IMPORTANT: turn the power switch to on, then plug the water heater back in.
8. As soon as the water heater is plugged back in, quickly turn the temperature dial from its already low position all the way to the highest temperature and then all the way back down to the coldest. This needs to be done 7 times (I think) in like 30 seconds. I have no idea how many times I frantically turned the knob until noticing that the error code indicator light was no longer blinking 7 times, just doing a very faint, subtle blinking but most fully lit. 60 seconds later, I heard the pilot light, did a little dance, and went to tell my husband what a genius I am!

So for those that have a GE Model SG50T12TVT and wondered if this would work, wonder no more because it does. But you need to know this tech trick to reset the gas control, which you might try before buying in case all that was needed was the reset. I borrowed this from a write up on the honeywell gas control, worked great and I didn't have to buy a new control...
1) Turn controller power switch off.
2) Unplug water heater, wait a few seconds, plug in (reboots controller).
3) With temp dial turned all the way down, turn controller power switch on. (Works the same way if you start with it all the way up.)
4) Quickly within a second insert a small screwdriver into dial slot, rapidly! twist temp dial all the way up and down seven times
(passes dial midpoint 7 times) .
5) On the seventh time you will hear a soft click and the heater will start ignition process.
6) If it does not work, repeat process. If it doesn't light, buy a new controller.

I received a code 81 from the Honeywell electronic gas valve on my GE water heater. I swapped out the flammable vapor sensor, reset the valve (turn temperature knob to low with the valve powered off, switch the power back on, then rotate the dial between full hot and low until the burners light) and it fired right up.

The plumber wanted $150 just to show up and take a look. I'm going to order another one of these to keep as a spare at home.

I have a 2016 Rheem PV that stopped working for flammable vapor code. I reset about 3-4x but kept erroring out. Replaced and no more issues.

Woke up the other morning with only cold water in the shower. The control valve on our Rheem water heater was blinking seven times, indicating failure of the flamable fume sensor. The tank is only 2 yrs. old and no flamable liquids or gases were in the area. Using an ohm meter, found that the sensor was reading about 115 k ohms. Some research indicated that a new sensor should read 45k ohms or less. I temporarily connected a 10k ohm resistor in place of the sensor, reset the control by turning power off, turning temperature setting to min, turned power back on, then cycled temperature setting from min to max until the burner clicked on. The resistor was only used to restore hot water until the new sensor arrived!

The new sensor arrived today ( it measured 20k ohms). I removed the resistor, connected the leads to the sensor, and snapped it in place in about 2 minutes. I will be ordering a spare!

Correct part. as advertised. Does what it is supposed to do. Upon contacting Rheem engineering, I found out - and this is not in any manual - that you reset the control by rapidly turning the temperature control knob from all the way cold to all the way hot several times (like 6 or 7 times) and the electronics will reset. There are a lot of procedures on line about grounding terminals and providing voltage to others, but the factory uses the temp control knob procedure and it works every time.
