I have a Rheem Performance Platinum water heater that uses this part. I had the 7 blink notice more and more often for 2-3 months, and finally the reset procedure didn't work, and the blinks changed to 8 blinks followed by one blink. The error codes printed on the water heater (and NOT in the manual) showed the eight-one notice to mean faulty FVS device. So I ordered this part, but in the meantime I needed to shower. I Googled the problem and found two potential solutions. You have to remove the faulty sensor from the heater by unplugging the two wires on the back. The first solution (not) was to put the two FVS leads in a half-full cereal bowl of water, then doing a reset, and it made the pilot ignite, but 20 seconds later it went out--not a viable solution. The second temporary fix (that worked) was to remove the sensor from its white plastic cuff housing to allow access to the actual terminals. This requires immobilizing the core of the sensor with a vise or a pair of vise grip pliers and using a screwdriver to break off the plastic cuff around it and the cover that has the four holes, which is held by glue. (Obviously, this disables it for future long-term use.). Then clean off the black stuff from the two rectangular terminals. The next step may sound a bit looney, but it works. Take a pencil and scribble on the plastic between the two terminals. Then plug the sensor back into the water heater harness. Turn the heater off, put the thermostat on low, unplug the heater, plug it back in, turn the switch on, use a screwdriver to rotate the thermostat from lowest to highest setting 7 times. You'll hear the pilot light come on, and it will stay on. Hello, warm shower! Why they sell this water heater without notifying the purchaser of this COMMON, almost predictable failure is beyond me. God forbid they would include a spare FVS with it, or maybe even provide an explanation in the manual in ordinary English! It may be a revenue generator for the plumber who sells the water heater, a reward for selling Rheem. Internet to the consumer's rescue!
