This compact, coating-free rice maker meets my needs, though it took some getting used to. Here's what I found:1) This cooker is noisy. Boiling water rattles the lid, even with a weight on top.2) Cleanup is easy, but scale builds up quickly. I wipe the outer (double-boiler) pan with a little citric acid and a wet sponge after each use to keep it shiny. The inner pan is easy (just a bit of starchy film at worst, dishwasher or by hand).3) Cooking time is longer than other rice cookers. Note: You have to wait some time after the machine turns off to allow the rice to finish cooking.4) The instructions produce undercooked (very dry) rice. I'm still adjusting the rice/water/boiler water amounts, but plan on adding around 1/4 to 1/2 more water than directed.Despite all this, I'm very happy to have found a no-coating rice cooker that gets the job done.

I spent a long time trying to find a rice cooker that did not use Teflon. This one has performed admirably over the last 9 months, fitting 3 cups of rice easily. (1 cup = 180mL, or 3/4c imperial.). We have cooked between 1 and 3 cups at a time, and each time the rice has been of a consistent texture. 1:1 ratio, Thai jasmine rice. We'll switch to short grain for winter soon enough, that has been good as well. Haven't tried congee yet, but given the dead-simplicity of the unit I'm sure it's just a question of small adjustments of the ratios. It's a little double-boiler workhorse that can be cleaned easily. Once I get the bulk off, I just put the cooking bowl in the dishwasher. Wipe out the boiler bowl with a paper towel if there is water remaining. It needs about 1/4 cup more water in the boiler base than the instructions call for, otherwise the steam runs out early. We also put a weight on the lid to keep it down, a 200g stone. Small concessions to achieve great benefits: enabling the elimination of Teflon and silicone in our household.
